Christmas belongs to childhood. You see it in the faces of children, that pure, luminous wonder that makes you remember what it felt like to be one. Lucky for us, every year we have the chance to find it again. And it waits for us in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, inside a grand resort that has stood at the heart of American life since 1778. A resort that has understood luxury since before the country itself was fully formed. It waits at The Greenbrier.

A Winter Arrival Like No Other

The moment you step through the doors, you are met not only with the grandness of it all, but with Christmas itself. At the center of the lobby, an elaborate miniature world of snow-dusted towns and lamplit streets holds court, a train bound for somewhere magical winding through it all, a scene unto itself. All around this Christmas centerpiece, the lobby breathes with life: children wide-eyed with wonder, couples holding hands, families dressed in their holiday finest. Layers upon layers of Christmas décor reignite the imagination. Red velvet bows cascade down the grand staircase alongside garlands of fresh pine, gold-ribboned wreaths crown every doorway, towering Christmas trees glow from every corner and corridor, and the whole of it shimmers with candlelight and ornament. This is The Greenbrier at Christmas.

The Signature Style of Dorothy Draper

Woven through all of that Christmas magnetism, you will find Dorothy Draper's Hollywood Regency spirit: ornate, bold, and utterly unapologetic. Her vision envelops the entire resort, every passageway, every sitting room, every guest room. The rooms are richly appointed, layered in color and texture. Those overlooking the front lawn offer a view of the great Christmas tree standing watch in the snow below. A scene straight from a Christmas card.

Dining With Distinction

Dining at The Greenbrier becomes part of the holiday celebration. Prime 44 West, named for West Virginia's own Jerry West, the NBA legend whose silhouette became the league's logo, delivers impeccable service, exceptional cuts, and an atmosphere of effortless elegance. The Snake River Farms Wagyu Tenderloin is superb, and the Lobster Mashed Potatoes, made with butter-poached lobster and Boursin cheese, are worth every indulgent bite. The Main Dining Room offers a more formal sense of occasion: a grand hall of deep green marble columns and glittering chandeliers, piano music drifting through a room so stately it feels less like a restaurant and more like dining inside a palace. The effect is one of quiet, unmistakable royalty.

Adventures on 11,000 Acres

By day, the 11,000-acre property becomes a playground. At Kate's Mountain Gun Club, even those returning to shooting after years away find their rhythm quickly with the help of an exceptional guide, and 5-Stand, with its clays launched from multiple angles, brings the inner adventurer completely alive. The Winter Carriage / Sleigh Ride offers something quieter: a snow-covered journey through the grounds, the driver narrating history as the valley unfolds around you. For those seeking adrenaline, the Jeep Driving Adventure promises to be the most thrilling activity of all. Behind the wheel, guests navigate the wintry backcountry through deep drifts and fresh mounds of snow, making the mountain landscape feel entirely their own.

A Spa Pause

Step away from the grandeur and descend into the Greenbrier Mineral Spa, an old-world sanctuary drawing from healing sulphur springs that have been on this property for nearly 250 years. The Greenbrier Treatment is a private ritual: a Sulphur Soak, followed by the Swiss Shower, the Scotch Spray, and a massage that releases everything you did not realize you were carrying. It is not a modern spa. It is a private sanctum, warm, hushed, deeply restorative. And when you step back out into those glittering corridors, back into the Christmas and the chandeliers and the music, everything looks even more beautiful than before.

A Christmas to Remember

The Greenbrier is beloved in the South, and it is easy to understand why. It reminds even the most sunshine-loyal traveler that winter still has its gifts: the sparkle of a legendary resort, the romance of a snow-covered landscape, and the regal Southern grandeur that makes every room feel like a presidential estate. At Christmas, it is something else entirely. A place where the season is not merely celebrated, but fully embraced.
